UAF men’s basketball are on a five game losing streak after loosing to both Northwest Nazarene Crusaders, 73-75, and the Wildcats of Central Washington, 70-74. In both games the Nanooks battled back from double-digits deficits multiple times, however in the final minutes the Nanooks lost due to turnovers and poor shot selection. The losses on Thursday and Saturday night brought their record to 5-12 for the season.

In the game against the Crusaders, the Nanooks almost rallied from 15 points down with 10 minutes left to win, but guard Adam Griffin missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer. Guard Ashton Edwards, whose stat line had 19 points, was perfect from the free throw line. Edwards was fouled twice on three pointers, which helped lead the Nanooks to a near victory. Center Almir Hadzisehovic, had 26 points and eight rebounds in the loss.

However, the team couldn’t seem to stop one of the league’s leading scorers, Nazarene’s Eric Kinney, who had 19 points and some highlight reel dunks.

“We missed three free-throws at the end and still found a way to stay in the game. But like I told the guys, we can’t focus on that last shot of the game. That game was won or lost within the first 30 minutes,” Mick Durham, UAF head coach, said.

The game against Central Washington on Saturday showed why the Wildcats are one of the top teams in the GNAC (12-4) opening the game up on a 20-7 run. The Nanooks showed resilience coming back within two at half time, 34-36 . The Nanooks led by six with 3:40 left in the game, but the Wildcats went on a 12-2 run to pull ahead for good. The Wildcat’s Aubrey Ball dismantled the Nanooks defense to finish with 19 points while going 3-7 from three point range. UAF’s Ashton Edwards was the leading scorer of the game at 18 points.
